Primary Purpose: Provide instruction to students of low incidence population with significant cognitive disabilities to develop domestic, vocational, and recreational/leisure, community and self-determination skills. Provide students receiving special education services with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth.
Qualifications
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
oBachelor's degree from an accredited college or university
oSpecial Education certification
oMeet Texas ?highly qualified? standards for the grade levels and content / subjects taught.
Responsibilities
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
oTeach special education life skills classes
oUtilize and implement special education programming adopted by Harmony Public Schools
oDevelop and implement Community Based Instruction appropriate to grade level
oCollect data to determine student?s strengths and weaknesses
oCollect data in order to develop student?s standards-based IEPs
oCollect data in order to measure student?s progress on IEPs
oCollaborate with parents, teachers and other relevant staff members in developing and implementing interventions
oModify the curriculum utilized by HPS based on the individual needs of each student
oAssist general education teachers in implementing a modified curriculum
oDevelop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans for students with behavior that interferes with learning
oProvide case management duties for assigned students
oTake CPI certification class or approved equivalent in order to implement de-escalation techniques and legal restraint procedures during crisis situations
oAttend ARD meetings for assigned students
oPrepare ARD paperwork for assigned students
oCreate a classroom environment that is conducive to learning
oDevelop lesson plans as instructed by supervisor
oEmploy a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media
oImplement, both by instruction and action, Harmony?s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives
oProvide grades to students in accordance with Harmony policy
oTake necessary and reasonable precautions to protect the students, equipment, materials, and facilities
oMaintain accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
oImplement appropriate and effective behavior management in the classroom and at assigned duties
oPlan and supervise purposeful assignment s for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s)
oProvide constructive feedback to teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) in cooperation with campus administration
oAttend staff meetings and serve on staff committees
oComply with all district and local campus routines and regulations
oParticipate in professional development activities to improve skills related to job assignment
oMaintain a positive and effective relationship with supervisors and coworkers
oEffectively communicate with colleagues, students, and parents
oPerform other special education teacher duties when applicable
oPerform other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
oAbility to work well under pressure.
oAbility to lead a team of people for purposes of developing effective teaching trategies for students with disabilities.
Knowledge of special needs students.
Knowledge of special education laws and regulations.
oKnowledge of curriculum and instruction.
oAbility to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.
oAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.
oAbility to use computer including software, database used by the district, spreadsheet and word processing software, calculator, copy machine and telephone.
oAbility to analyze data
oAbility to use effective interview techniques, effective public speaking skills, and problem-solving skills
Work Environment And Physical Requirements
oThere may be special requirements for working with assigned students including lifting and positioning students, controlling behavior through physical restraint, assisting non-ambulatory students, and biological exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.
Nights and weekend activities will be occasionally required.
oPosition is in classroom setting and requires intermittent speaking, standing, walking and writing.
oModerate travel may be required.
