Role Synopsis
Sitting within the bp trading & shipping (T&S) legal team in Singapore, this role will support bp’s Asia Pacific refining and products trading (T&S RPT) business. bp’s T&S business trades energy commodities across the globe including crude oil, refined products, gas, power and renewables. bp’s T&S business has a fantastic reputation within the market of being entrepreneurial and dynamic.

The role would be most suitable for a lawyer with strong experience in banking and finance transactions at a top tier international firm. This role will support a dynamic business both on transactional work as well as other strategic business matters. Being part of a larger team provides a unique opportunity for non-commodity lawyers to be trained in commodities work on the job.

  • Handling a variety of disputes relating to trading contracts and governmental and regulatory investigations
  • Working closely with and establishing good working relationships with T&S legal colleagues in the other regions together with bp legal specialist teams and outside counsel
  • To work confidently and effectively with business and functional stakeholders with minimal supervision, but with the judgement to promptly inform and work with the Managing Counsel, T&S – RPT EH on more complex and sensitive matters.
Essential Experience
  • Substantial experience in Banking and Finance transactions with high value and complex financing structures at a top tier international firm
  • A deep understanding of LMA (and ideally, APLMA) precedents
  • Ability to prioritise conflicting demands, operate independently and effectively against short timelines and provide prompt and commercially focused advice
  • Excellent English language drafting skills
  • An ability to work internationally and with different cultures
  • Proven track record as an effective team player
  • Ability to build and maintain strong professional working relationships and promote networking, open communication and effective collaboration
Desirable Experience
  • Ideally experienced in trade finance – offtake backed prepayment financing, funded participation arrangements, receivable purchase programs and other financing arrangements (such as URPs) along with appropriate credit support arrangements
  • Experience in oil and gas commodity trading and understanding of the market dynamics as well as the risks in the Asia Pacific region
  • Experience in advising on complex trade finance arrangements, M&A and JVs would be helpful
  • Sound competition/antitrust, sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption law knowledge
